Beauty in the Books

Art appraiser Jennifer Carman is an open book if you’re looking to learn more about paintings, sculptures and decorative accessories. Since the age of eight she has been collecting artist’s monographs and exhibition catalogs, beginning with a large book of highlights from the Louvre Museum she received as a Christmas gift. “Until that time I was mostly familiar with books full of text where the stories would evoke a vision. With books full of artwork the vision is provided for you, requiring your mind to grapple with a new set of ideas,” she explains. Needless to say, Carman was taken with a passion for the books. “As a child I would save my allowance so I could slowly grow the collection,” she recalls.

Carman, who owns Little Rock’s J.Carman, Inc. Art Advisory and Appraisal Services, has allowed her love of art to evolve from a hobby to a career. She now has more than 3,000 books on art and decorative accessories, many of which she uses to identify and appraise her clients’ pieces. However when it comes to her personal collection, it’s not necessarily books that cover sought-after topics, ones that are rare finds themselves or even works considered to be of value that catch her well-trained eye. Rather, among her favorites are art books that evoke emotion or bring to mind certain places, experiences or people she’s been fortunate to meet during her pursuit of this passion.

Spring Forward

Shane Westmoreland is no stranger to collections, historical artifacts or vintage pieces in general. In fact, it’s his livelihood. As owner of Andrew’s Antiques, which can be found in booths at numerous malls around the state including Jenifer’s Antiques, Crystal Hill Antique Mall and Mid-Towne Antique Mall, he spends his days tracking down rare, one-of-a-kind finds. “I specialize in vintage and antique pieces, including everything from bronzes and ivory to large industrial pieces,” says Westmoreland.

However, it was jewelry rather than these large items, that gave him his start in the business. Westmoreland would visit local sales in search of jewelry and found an interesting timepiece one day while scouring the items. “It was a beautiful chronograph watch covered in chewed Big Red gum,” he laughs. His trained eye knew the piece was valuable, so he purchased it and set about cleaning his first timepiece. From there Westmoreland educated himself on vintage timepieces and added to the collection, all the while gaining a respect for watches in general. “A man’s watch is a part of him. It’s something he wears every day and it tells his story,” he says, noting many men receive timepieces for milestones such as graduation or retirement. Though some of the watches shown here are for sale in his booths, many of Westmoreland’s favorites remain prized pieces in his personal collection.

Celestial Brights

Fresh, bold colors have never been more popular in fashion or home design. However, it wasn’t this vibrant contemporary trend that led Neil McConnell to his first piece of Moon and Star glassware. Rather, it was a childhood memory and a trip to an antique mall more than 17 years ago. “I saw a blue glass canister with that signature Moon-and-Star motif, and I remember thinking it was just like the ones my mother and grandmother had when I was growing up,” says McConnell. “My mom’s canisters were green and my grandmother had ruby ones,” he adds.

While the glassware, which was made in a variety of tabletop pieces, experienced great popularity in the 1950s and 60s, it has been produced since the late 1800s. The pattern was originally known as Palace glass; however, it soon earned the nickname Moon and Star due to its star-like impressions. Later productions of the pattern in the early 1900s made the nickname its official title.
The original color, crystal clear, also changed. Soon, a range of shades was developed in enough hues to make even the color wheel jealous of their vibrancy. “Originally, I was only going to collect blue, the shade of the first canisters I’d seen, but then I found a piece for just $5, and I started collecting every shade they offered,” laughs McConnell.

Today, he has a collection of more than 2,500 pieces of the iconic glassware. Tumblers, goblets, candy dishes and canisters are among the more popular pieces, and are therefore often easier to find. McConnell owns a set of tumblers and goblets in every color made. However, it is the rarer, hard-to-find items that he enjoys hunting for and collecting. Some of these pieces include decanters, epergnes, candlesticks and punch bowl sets. He is particularly fond of the large stein tankards or mugs. Only 12 of these exist in each color, and McConnell currently has two in his collection. He also likes the pattern’s lamps and tea-courting candlestick holders.
With a collection this large and varied, it may seem that McConnell has been on a near daily hunt over the past two decades. “I was fortunate to find a lot of my pieces in the 1990s when there were not a lot of people seeking it. Only more recently has it gained popularity and become harder to locate, and therefore more costly,” he explains. The pattern is also still produced today by Weishar Enterprises. Those on the hunt can recognize these pieces, which were all made in 1988 and after, by their Weishar signature.

Not only has McConnell enjoyed the hunt for each unique piece, he has also had the opportunity to meet other collectors through The Society of Moon and Star Pattern Glass, a club specifically for enthusiasts of the wares. Glass shows around the nation bring the club together to compare pieces. McConnell is currently serving as chairman of the club. “It’s fun to get together, set up a display and hear how others have grown their own collections,” he says.

Elegant Antiques

For Lewis Morris, seeking out and collecting rare, vintage pieces is a way of life. As a second-generation antiques dealer and co-owner of Morris Antiques in Keo, he has spent his life searching both near and far for one-of-a-kind pieces of furniture, glassware and other collectibles. However, there’s one collection that immediately caught his eye and has managed to hold his attention for more than 30 years—Wedgwood’s Jasperware.

These unglazed stoneware pieces were originally created by Josiah Wedgwood of England and were first available publicly in 1775. When Wedgwood began his work the scenes depicted were mainly from Greek mythology. However, as time passed the designs evolved to include everyone from George Washington to Princess Diana. The iconic white reliefs appear on a variety of tabletop and service pieces in a range of colors including light blue, dark blue, yellow, green, crimson, lilac (which often has more of a rosy pink appearance) and even black. While numerous options were produced, the dark blue background quickly became the most popular and is therefore the most common and easiest to find.

Like many collectors, Morris found his first piece while traveling. “My family and I would occasionally go on buying trips in England and Western Europe for our shop. In the early 1980s we were there and I saw my first piece of old, original Wedgwood. It immediately drew my eye and since then I have been picking up pieces whenever I get the opportunity,” says Morris. That first piece was a dark blue biscuit jar, or as we call them in America—cookie jars. While this piece is fairly common, it led to a passion for Jasperware and a curiosity to seek out some of the pattern’s more unusual finds.

“After I purchased a few pieces and began to do a little research, I decided to collect older pieces even though Wedgwood’s Jasperware is still produced today. Maybe it was my love of antiques, but I wanted to focus on collecting pieces that were marked only with the ’Wedgwood‘ stamp, which meant they were produced before 1891, making them harder to find and more valuable,” says Morris.

Not too long after this decision, Morris and his family visited Paris and spent some time in the iconic flea markets. He recalls seeing a large green jardinière while shopping. “I remember thinking, please don’t let that be marked ‘Wedgwood’ only,” he laughs, “because I knew I was going to have to find a way to stuff it into my carry on.” As luck would have it the piece was from this period and it is now proudly displayed in his home.

While Morris likes all colors of Jasperware, he is eager to add more large pieces to his collection. “Larger pieces that are taller than eight inches are harder to find. Simply because of their size they are more valuable,” he notes. He would particularly like to find a large Portland vase, which has small handles on either side of the opening and is considered to be a signature piece in any collection. Tri-color pieces, which may have areas featuring blue, yellow, green or any other Jasperware color, are also prized possessions among collectors.

While his focus lies on finding pieces made prior to 1891, Morris notes the beauty and strong tradition still carried on in the collectibles produced today. “I think everyone should collect something. It doesn’t matter what it is as long as it’s something you like and enjoy. It gives you something to hunt for on vacations and trips, plus you never know what you might find,” he concludes.

In Pursuit of Purses

Growing up in Murfreesboro, Anita Davis learned how to spot a diamond in the rough in no time. A collector by nature she has long been passionate about flea markets and searching for vintage hankies, accessories and jewelry. However, she seems to love the hunt for a purse more than anything.

“As a child I was always intrigued by both my mother’s and grandmother’s purses. I remember my grandmother kept her small pocketbook close to her at all times,” says Anita. Similarly, she remembers the importance of her mother’s handbag and how it was a reflection of who she was.

After leaving the state’s diamond capital, Anita spent several decades in Camden and clearly remembers seeing a white lace purse in one of the town’s store windows. This would become the first true piece of her collection. However, it was nearly 20 years later before she began to augment the group, which has now grown into a wide and varied array of more than 2,500 bags.

“I don’t always go for the most elegant or prestigious purses. I’m usually drawn to the ones with a fun theme or bright color,” admits Anita. Among her collection she has everything from plastic purses to a cat-themed bag. Almost every time period of the 1900s through present day is represented, too. Whether it is a magazine clutch from the 1970s, a 1950s Lucite bucket purse or a Cinderella-pumpkin-inspired evening bag from the 1960s, a range of dates and styles are included.

For Anita, the collection came to be about the importance of the purse and all that it symbolized. “A woman’s purse shows a lot about her,” she says. “It can show her interests, how she carries herself and her style. Each individual purse can be a reflection of its owner’s identity,” she adds. As she began to gather the purses she discovered many people who had similar feelings about their own or a loved one’s purse.

These conversations coupled with her passion for seeking out the bags led to the idea of an exhibit with purses from every decade, 1900-2000. She began the project in 2004 with the help of two other women she found through Kent State University. Through their diligent search for handbags, and the stories that accompany them, a traveling exhibit known as “The Purse and the Person: A Century of Women’s Purses” was born and has visited numerous cities around the U.S. including a two-term run at the Historic Arkansas Museum in 2006.

One of her favorite pieces that appeared in the exhibit was a basket-style purse she carried in high school. There was even a small battery-powered fan she remembered using as a 13-year-old girl. This piece traveled along with the purse as one of the accessories, as did odds and ends from some of her mother’s purses.

With a collection this large, it may be unfathomable to think Anita doesn’t carry a different bag everyday. In past years, she did change out her handbags frequently; however, she admits she is quite attached to a small black, triangular-shaped bag that has been her pocketbook of choice for several years now.

Currently Anita is on the hunt for a denim bag from the late 1960s or early 1970s. “I’d love to have one with some original patches from the war protests era,” she says. “I would also love to have one of the fringed purses from that time period. We had these in the exhibit and I would love to add one to my personal collection,” she says.

As for the rest of her collection, Anita has plans to recreate a portion of the exhibit, including accessories and images of Arkansas women, to showcase in a gallery downtown. As owner of The Bernice Garden and an avid supporter of Little Rock’s South Main area, Anita feels this will be the perfect complement to the neighborhood’s recent renovation, as well as a lasting legacy for the women of Arkansas.

Take the Cake

Carla Fuller remembers clearly the piece that started her collection and obsession with cake stands. “I was 13 and my family and I were looking for a Mother’s Day present for my mom. We found a beautiful white, square milk-glass cake stand and I loved it,” she recalls. The piece turned out to be not only a perfect gift, but also a jumpstart for Carla, who now has a collection of more than 50 cake stands. This group includes the very cake stand she gave her mother as a child. “Two years ago she returned it to me,” says Carla, who was happy to have the piece that started it all among her array.

After the purchase of the first stand, Carla added a similar green milk-glass stand to the collection and has continued to pick up pieces here and there for more than 20 years. After she graduated from law school at the University of Arkansas, she immediately went to work for the Department of Human Services and covered seven counties in the state. As she drove from town to town, she would occasionally stop in flea markets and antique shops in hopes of finding a unique piece to grow her collection. However, it’s not necessary that the piece be vintage or even valuable for it to be added to the mix. “If I see a stand that has a great shape or a fun color at Target, I don’t hesitate to pick it up,” she says.

She fondly remembers finding a favorite crystal stand on a trip to London. Another one of her favorite pieces came from our home state. “A friend of mine that I used to run with every morning had been telling me about this beautiful pottery she was having made,” says Carla. “It sounded gorgeous to me and I was thrilled to get a cake stand in the same style.” The piece Carla refers to is a ceramic stand with rich earth tones. It was made by Katy Carnahan of Katy’s Pottery in Alicia, Arkansas. “It is definitely one of my favorites,” she adds.

Carla’s collection isn’t just beautiful; it is useful as well. “I love to entertain and often host parties in my home,” she says. “I’ve hosted everything from the White County Barr Association annual Christmas party to functions for our local Searcy dinner theater group and most recently my 14-year-old daughter’s birthday party,” she adds. The cake stands come in handy during such occasions. Carla likes to use a variety of these pieces to add height and create interest in her table displays. What’s more, the stands aren’t just for pastry confections. Carla finds them to be especially useful for serving dips and hors d’oeuvres. If cupcakes are your fancy, Carla recommends small domed stands made specifically for displaying a singular treat. She also has several of these small gems in her collection.

Many of Carla’s friends and neighbors throughout the community are familiar with her collection and they often borrow the pieces for their own parties and gatherings. “I get calls all the time from friends who want to borrow a certain piece and I’m happy to lend the stands to them. I’m always glad they can be used,” says Carla.

When they aren’t being loaned to a neighbor or friend for a party, Carla keeps the collection in wide, low, built-in shelves in her home. “Even though we didn’t build these specifically for the cake stands, it just seems the shelves were made for them,” she says with a smile.

Around the Globe

Evan Lipschitz never intended to amass a collection of close to 200 snow globes. Instead, the pieces of the collection seemed to find him through his interests and ultimately his travels. “I found my first snow globe on a weekend trip to an antiques store,” says the 24-year-old collector, who was only seven or eight at the time. “I remember seeing the ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ globe and immediately wanting to have it.” Evan was visiting the antiques store with his sisters, who were in search of unique salt-and-pepper shakers, so it seemed natural that he, too, should begin a hobby. Thus, his collection was born.

Snow globes, or water domes as they are sometimes called, are believed to have originated in France in the late 1800s. The concept is said to have derived from clear glass paperweights, which were highly popular at the time. In 1889, the debut of a globe featuring the Eiffel Tower was revealed at the International Exposition or World’s Fair in Paris. This debut helped to not only increase the globes’ exposure, but also its popularity. Soon after, the small curiosities became a staple in American gift shops, and in the 1950s, the introduction of plastic allowed for mass production, making snow globes the souvenir of choice for children and adults alike.

After Evan’s initial purchase at the antiques store, a family friend heard about the new hobby and decided to help. She began to add to his collection by surprising him with a new globe each Christmas. Knowing that the family friend also admired snow globes, Evan began to return the favor by purchasing ones for her as well, beginning a gift exchange of holiday globes that would last for years to come. Evan received many of his holiday-themed and some of the travel-themed globes as a part of this gift exchange.

However, his collection really took off when Evan began to travel. “I have almost been around the world, and I try to get a snow globe from every place I visit,” he says. His collection features globes from nearly everywhere—including nearby Texas and Louisiana, as well as more far-flung locales such as London, China and Ireland. On a trip to Paris, Evan bought a globe featuring the famous Eiffel Tower landmark that originally began the buzz about these small wonders.

While many of the globes from his travels are among his favorites, including one from a recent trip to Jordan and another from the Egyptian pyramids, Evan also has a fondness for movie scenes that are set in the globes—much like the original globe that began his collection. “I have one that shows a snowy scene from the movie ‘Fargo’ and another that shows Jamie Lee Curtis in a scene from ‘Halloween.’ As a child I even collected all of the ‘101 Dalmatians’ globes,” says Evan.

The often bright, cheerful colors of the globes and their characteristic happy scenes, coupled with the tranquil drifting snow or occasional filling of glitter, offers a brilliance that attracts more than just bright-eyed children. The beauty and colorful qualities of the globes are something to be enjoyed by all generations.

What’s next for Evan and his global collection? “I haven’t been to Hawaii, so I would definitely like one from there—maybe a beach scene with sand,” he says. “I would also like to go to China and get a globe from The Great Wall.” With any luck, the collection will soon feature these scenes and more.

A Shore Thing

Collector Annette Herrington has a love for the beach that has continued to grow through the years. When she and her husband, Phil, married in the 1970s, they honeymooned in Sea Island, Georgia, and since that time she’s always had a fondness for the sea, sun and sand. After the couple’s daughters came along, they passed their love of the shore on to them. “We often took summer trips to Sea Island and to Nantucket, and it only made me love the sea more,” says Annette.

When the couple had the chance to purchase a condo of their own in Destin, Florida, they jumped at the offer. Soon after, Annette began making plans to decorate the condo with a theme that was authentic to the region, beginning with small vintage statues and novelties that were united by a common theme—the sea. “I really wanted the condo to have a vintage feel with small little touches that reminded me of the beach and all the things I love about it,” she says. She also wanted the rooms in her condo to be filled with bright happy pops of color. The accessories collection was the ideal way to bring her vision of a vibrant vintage look to life.

“It’s such a whimsical collection and I never began it with the intent of taking it seriously,” says Annette. In fact, you might say her collection of colorful, beach-themed figurines, plates and memorabilia began on a whim. She and her youngest daughter were in Destin working on the condo and took a day trip to peruse local antique stores. During the next 20 years, she continued to grow her collection in much the same manner, picking up unique finds at both local antique shops and on her travels. “It’s like a treasure hunt, you never know what you’ll find,” she laughs. One of her favorite pieces is a miniature red-and-white wicker beach chair. “It belonged to the mother of a close friend,” says Annette. “Both the mother and daughter knew I collected beach trinkets and decided to give it to me as a gift. I absolutely love it because it reminds me of them and the beach,” she says.

Other well-loved pieces include small bathing beauty statues, which were sold as souvenirs at ever-popular beachside shops. Annette is particularly fond of a chalk statue of a girl in a bright pink swimsuit that likely dates from the 1930s.

Her finds don’t end there. Anything from vintage guidebooks to shore-inspired tablecloths and maps of the coast has joined her collection over time. A number of tin pails and shovels with cheerful, brightly colored children’s beach scenes can also be found among the treasures, and similar versions of these now sell online for around $20 each. Many of the smaller accessories were also originally used as statues in aquarium seascapes.

When Annette and Phil sold their condo on the coast, she knew the collection needed to stay visible. She boxed up the goods and brought them back to Little Rock. When a friend suggested she feature the collection in her guest bedroom, she knew that was the ideal spot to display the finds. “I like to think the pieces are a treat for my guests and maybe even a reminder of their own travels to the beach,” she says. The first piece they found on the jaunt was a small ceramic seaweed figurine. Annette remembers being drawn to its vintage appeal and surprised that she could snag it for just a few dollars.

A Thousand Stories

Just as a picture is worth a thousand words, camera collector Hubert L. Smith Sr.’s career as a professional photographer is the sum of a lifetime of treasured memories and fascinating stories. Smith has served as president of the Arkansas Professional Photographers Association, photographed nine presidents, including JFK, traveled with former Arkansas governor Winthrop Rockefeller as his personal photographer, presented one of his own published books to President Gerald Ford during a visit to the White House, made the cover of Time and The New York Times, had works published in Sports Illustrated, Life and Newsweek—and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. “I’ve been very lucky,” he says, smiling. “I’ll put it that way.”

Smith discovered photography as a teenager living in Lonoke. A photographer invited Smith to his dark room, and that was it. “I was hooked,” Smith recalls. Just a week after graduating from high school, Smith took a job at a Little Rock studio. From there, his career expanded and evolved.

A writer from the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette gave Smith the opportunity to work with Rockefeller, with whom he became close friends. “I accompanied Governor Rockefeller to Washington for President Nixon’s inauguration,” he remembers, “where I had the chance to photograph the Rockefeller brothers together.” The Dem-Gazette, and then the Austin American-Statesman, also fed Smith’s intense passion for sports, particularly of the Razorback variety. He was on the sidelines at the 1964 National Championship football game, taking pictures of course.

With his intense interest and expertise in the field, it was only a matter of time before Smith would begin collecting antique and vintage cameras, which he’s bought and traded since his retirement in 2001. Having amassed his collection from flea markets and the Mid-America Camera Show in St. Louis from year to year, he now has a booth at Crystal Hill Antique Mall in North Little Rock.

Smith began his career with a 35mm, eventually progressing to larger formats such as the Hasselblad. Similarly, his 300 or 400 cameras represent the wide range of technologies developed over the years, from photographic plates to film. Many date to the early- to mid-1900s, and some to the 1800s.

His collection also boasts styles that he believes have the most interest or visual appeal, catering to visitors who want to display cameras in their homes. There are a variety of Kodaks, commonly geared for amateur photography. “Every family had a Kodak,” Smith notes.

The colorful Kodak Petite and Beau Brownie varieties, made from 1928-1933, appealed to the style-conscious women of that era. The Petite came in five colors with deco metal and enamel faceplates, while the Beau Brownie box camera, designed by Walter Dorwin Teague, has striking geometric patterns. Another prime example from Kodak is the Brownie Hawkeye, a Bakelite camera made from 1949-1961.

One of Smith’s favorite styles is the stereo camera, which has two or more lenses that simulate binocular vision to create three-dimensional images. He also has twin-lens reflex cameras, Pentax, Goerz-Anschütz folding cameras, and even one that shoots darts. But one thing’s for sure: there’s not a single digital camera in the whole bunch. “I’m old-fashioned,” he says.

With front row access to historic sporting events and political figures, Smith was able to document fleeting moments that would have otherwise been forgotten or lost. But even more than the photos, it was the process he loved, the film and the dark rooms. “I’ve probably spent half my life in a dark room,” he says. “There’s just something about it.”

Brilliant Blue

En route to Georgia nearly 40 years ago, renowned North Carolina interior designer and author Kathryn Greeley wandered into a little antique shop along the highway and discovered what would become one of the great loves of her life: flow blue china.

That happenstance paved the way for a large collection, and flow blue is now a calling card for Greeley’s gracious style of entertaining and decorating, which she shared with Arkansans on a recent trip to promote her book, “The Collected Tabletop,” and guide an antiques tour to Morris Antiques in Keo and beyond. “No room in my home, Chestnut Cottage, is without flow blue china,” laughs Greeley, “including the bathrooms.”

What first attracted Greeley to flow blue was the contrasting white ceramic and cobalt dye. Flow blue is a type of transferware with a telltale cloudy pattern that results when lime or ammonia added during the manufacturing process causes the dye to bleed into the white areas. It originated in the 1820s in Staffordshire, England, though some debate whether the technique arose by accident or design. Nonetheless, “it added character and uniqueness,” Greeley says. And it soon became wildly popular.

The technique creates a range of blue shades that “are all compatible and live graciously together on a tabletop,” adds Greeley. “That’s another thing I love about it.” Its versatility is especially helpful when Greeley hosts large holiday dinners that call for place settings across several tables. She simply selects from among the 50 or 60 patterns in her collection, including her favorite “Abbey” by George Jones & Sons. And, using a step stool, she plucks the pieces she needs from the walls and shelves where they’re displayed. “My turkey platter always comes off the wall for Thanksgiving,” she laughs.

Most of Greeley’s flow blue originated in England, reputable producers being W.H. Grindley & Co., Johnson Brothers, Spode, Royal Doulton, Henry Alcock & Co. and Burslem. Her collection also boasts a variety of unique and rare pieces, such as a tall columnar fern stand, which doubles as a place to hold wine by the dinner table, as well as a rectangular shredded wheat bowl, soup tureen, cheese helmet, fish platter, punch bowl and her beloved toast rack. “I wanted a toast rack for so long,” she remembers, “and after years of searching, an antique dealer found one for me in England, and my husband gave it to me for Christmas.”

Greeley counts Mary Frank Gaston’s “The Collector’s Encyclopedia of Flow Blue China” as her favorite book of reference, but offers suggestions for new collectors. Older pieces usually have a heavier weight and a more saturated dark blue color, while flow blue produced after 1890 will have a stamp that shows place of origin, as required by an American tax law passed that year. Gilding is also found on newer pieces.

Greeley’s collection of flow blue is the result of several decades of searching, and has taken her on many journeys throughout the United Kingdom. Her most recent additions, however, came from Arkansas. Aware of Greeley’s love of flow blue, an Arkansas-based friend spotted it at an antique shop and emailed Greeley images.
