A cheerful color palette and sweet, personal details await the daughter of our Managing Editor, Tiffany Adams.
“I didn’t know that I had always wanted a pink nursery, but I naturally drifted in that direction,” Tiffany Adams says. “Actually, I was convinced I was having a boy at first,” she says of the surprise pregnancy. After several months of hoping for a baby, Tiffany and her husband Ben decided to pursue other means to grow their family and began the lengthy process of being screened and approved as adoptive parents. One morning last fall, Tiffany awoke and took a pregnancy test — more out of habit than expectation — and to her surprise, it was positive. “The timing of it just blows me away, because the very next day, we got the call that we had been approved for adoption,” she recalls. For now, the Adams’ adoption is on hold as they welcome their daughter, Martha Ann, home.
“I have been joking that her colors are blush and bashful, like Shelby says on Steel Magnolias,” Tiffany says. “But there are actually three shades of pink in the room.” A vibrant pink buffalo check was the starting point for the nursery, and Tiffany hopes that the draperies will be used as Martha Ann grows. She and Ben updated a dresser and wardrobe cabinet with a bright raspberry color — a custom mix of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint — and new knobs from Anthropologie. The bedding, a combination from Pottery Barn Kids and Serena & Lily, adds the third, more subtle, shade of pink. A classic white Jenny Lind-style crib and an upholstered rocking chair round out the furnishings.
To accessorize the space, the couple brought in a few pieces from their own childhood. The set of Beatrix Potter books belonged to Ben and an embroidered dress that Tiffany wore as a baby is framed in a shadowbox. Over the crib, an abstract piece called “May Blessings Rain Down” by Tiffany’s local friend and college roommate, Bethany Johnson, introduces a contrasting shade of mint green to the space, which Tiffany calls “sweetly chic.”
